CROSSMARK® Purchases Websense Enterprise to Support Safe Internet Use for 9,000 Employees Worldwide

Worldwide Business Services Provider Impressed by Granular and Flexible URL Database

CROSSMARK, which provides marketing and sales support for such global companies as Land O'Lakes, Sara Lee Coffee and Tea, and Chicken of the Sea, recently installed Websense Enterprise to manage the Web use for its 9,000 Internet-enabled employees. Its associates often use the Web as a valuable tool and resource for business, but CROSSMARK management is all too aware of the productivity, bandwidth and legal problems associated with Internet misuse. That's why the leading provider of merchandising, consulting and outsourced management services chose to install Websense Enterprise.

Headquartered in Plano, Texas, with 54 offices mostly in the United States and Canada , CROSSMARK was looking to offer a safe Internet environment for its employees, while also preserving network resources. After researching various products and ultimately being referred to Websense Inc. by industry analysts, CROSSMARK chose Websense Enterprise filtering software as its employee Internet management (EIM) solution of choice. The decision was an easy choice because Websense features the industry's most comprehensive and customizable URL database, with more than 4 million Web sites, encompassing 1 billion Web pages.

"Websense Enterprise's customizable database allowed us to enforce our existing written Internet policy seamlessly and limit excessive non-work-related Internet use," said Jason Robohm, director of technical services at CROSSMARK. "Because of the overall completeness of the database, and the fact that we are sent automatic updates of new Web sites daily, we never have to worry about our employees surfing for inappropriate material or stumbling across new sites emerging on the Web."

In addition to blocking the "sinful six" (Web sites relating to adult, race/hate, violence, tasteless, gambling and inappropriate content), CROSSMARK subscribed to Websense Enterprise's three Premium Group categories. These categories allow CROSSMARK to eliminate online ads, carefully manage streaming media Web sites and block access to sites infected with malicious mobile code or sites that harbor spyware.

Even though CROSSMARK blocks access to certain types of Web content, the company wanted to offer employees a pre-set amount of time each business day to use the Internet for personal reasons. Because Websense Enterprise is so customizable, CROSSMARK utilized the software's Quotas feature, which gives employees 30 minutes per day for surfing non-work-related sites. By taking advantage of this flexible feature, CROSSMARK is not only able to manage employee use of personal Web surfing, but it also eliminates access to sites that create legal liabilities.

"One of the most desirable features of Websense Enterprise is that it leaves the decision of what Web sites to block, and what Web sites to make available, completely up to the customer," said Bill Goldbach, vice president of sales, North America, Websense Inc. "Companies, like CROSSMARK, are drawn to this kind of flexibility because it encourages employees to think more carefully about how they use the Internet at work, while also acknowledging that limited amounts of time for personal Web use is entirely acceptable."
